Albert was the first Civil War volunteer from Carver, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the 1st Rhode Island Volunteers and was mustered in on 17 Apr 1861. He was wounded and taken prisoner at the First Battle of Bull Run/Manassas (21 July 1861). Albert's right arm was amputated on 24 July 1861. He was on the list of Union prisoners in Richmond on 25 Sept 1861. Albert was released from Libby Prison in Richmond on 7 Oct 1861 and was mustered out on 20 Nov 1861.

Albert was a clerk in the War Department in Washington, DC, for 15 years following the Civil War. He married Maria Young (Davis) (28 Nov 1844 - 23 Dec 1918) on 8 Aug 1871 in Washington, DC.

In the 1880 and 1900 U.S. Censuses, Albert and Maria were living in Carver, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, and he was the "town clerk" (1880) and a "farmer" (1900).
