BICYCLING EXTRAORDINARY
That Marvelous Record Breaking Ride From Charleston To Marion Was A Myth, Originated By A Country Paper
The statement of this correspondent in The News and Courier yesterday that Mr. John P. McMillan came from Charleston to Marion last week on his bicycle in one day was made on what was then regarded as reliable information. The Marion Star, the brilliant country luminary, for lack of something fresh to place before its readers, republished today the criticism of your paper today ___ the wonderful feat of the young bicyclist with a few comments of its own upon so extraordinary performance, but it is well to inform the readers of the Star, through the columns of The News and Courier that if a whopping "big one" has been inadvertently told by this correspondent it is rather ___ news for The Star to give them this week, as the item in The News and Courier was based on a statement made in The Star in it's last week's issue.
However, it must be true, incredible as it may seem, as newspapers are always reliable."

McMILLAN'S RIDE TO MARION
He Rode On His Bicycle From Charleston To Marion In Seventeen Hours
"To the editor of The News and Courier:
Upon returning from a fishing trip I have had my attention called to two articles in The News and Courier in regard to my ride. To put matters straight, if you wish to have anything further to explain, I will say I rode by the side of the said railroad track, which accounted for the good roads, and I made the trip in 17 hours, but took two days to come, as I did not ride during the middle part or the heat of the day.
I made St. Stephen's the first morning, and laid over there several hours, then made Kingstree that night, where I stayed. The next morning I made Florence and laid over there till the afternoon, when I came on to Marion.
Thinking this is self-explanatory, I am yours truly, John P. McMillan, Marion, August 1, 1895
