Daughter of William Joseph and Annie Stackhouse Montgomery. Kate married Frank Edwin Brodnax in 1912 in Marion.

COLUMBIA - Mrs. Kate Montgomery Brodnax, daughter of the late W. J. and Annie Stackhouse Montgomery of Marion, died at a local hospital early Monday morning, after an illness of six years. For the past ten days her condition had been growing gradually worse and she was constantly attended by her sisters, Mrs. Horace Tilghman and Miss Rachel Montgomery, of Marion, who remained in the city.

Mrs. Brodnax is pleasantly remembered in this city because of her brilliant intellect. her vivid personality, her interest in special work, and her pioneering in the interest of the League of Women Voters. After attending college in this state she studied at Columbia University and later matriculated in the law department of the university of South Carolina, where she graduated with honor in 1923.

During the busy war days she gave tirelessly of her time and means and it was through her efforts that many things were done for the comfort of the women war workers in the city. She did her bit, multiplied many times, working with the Red Cross and other agencies.

She is survived by her husband, Frank E. Brodnax; and four brothers and sisters, T. C. Montgomery of Washington, John K. Montgomery of New York and South America, Mrs. Horace Tilghman and Miss Mabel Montgomery of Marion.

The body was taken to Marion on Monday afternoon and the funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Montgomery home.

The death of Mrs. Brodnax will bring sadness to many people over the entire state, for she was well known and greatly admired by all those who knew her.

MARION - Funeral services for Mrs. Kate Montgomery Brodnax, who died in a hospital in Columbia early Monday morning, took place at the home Tuesday afternoon. She was laid to rest in the beautiful old Methodist cemetery in the family plot where sleep her father, mother and baby girl.

Many lifelong friends attended.

Born at Marion, the youngest daughter of the late W. J. Montgomery and Mrs. Annie Stackhouse Montgomery, she was popular for her winsomeness of disposition and personality before she developed interest in public affairs, which put her in the forefront of the woman's movement in South Carolina.

Her illness began soon after her law examination, and she was never able to practice her profession though hope was entertained for her ultimate recovery for several years.

Note:
Kate's husband, Frank Edwin Brodnax, was born on June 25, 1880 in Georgia. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1900 and was an agent with the State Life Insurance Company. I've been unable to learn what became of him after Kate's death.
