John B. Witte Dies at 82; Headed Firm
John B. Witte, 82, head of the firm of John B. Witte & Sons, plumbing, heating and metal work contractors, died today in his home, 19 Springale, after an illness of more than a year.
Funeral services will be Friday morning from the home and St. Joseph's Church, with interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Mr. Witte was born in Becktitn, Westphalia, Germany, Feb. 1, 1864, having learned the trade of coppersmith in that country. He came to America in 1881 and after working in Ilion and Herkimer for a year moved to Utica, where he since had lived.
In this city he was first employed by William E. Henry and for 11 years by the firm of Wicks, Hughes & Griffith, where he learned the trade of plumber and tinsmith. In 1893 he established himself in business on Columbia St. with Joseph Morath as a partner. Mr. Morath withdrew in 1895 and Mr. Witte became sole proprietor. He transferred his business to Varick St. in 1900 and 10 years ago moved again to his present location at 522 Varick.
In 1912 he incorporated under the name of John B. Witte & Sons, his associates being his sons, John A., Henry F., Fred M., Aloys C., George N., Joseph A. and Charles L..
For many years Mr. Witte was a member of the Master Plumbers Association and the Master Sheet Metal Workers' Association, in both of which groups he was active.
He was active in German social circles, being a member of the Utica Maennerchor and a director for many years. He also served as president or in other offices for the Deutscher Bund, a sick benefit society; the Germania Industrial and Mutual Assistance Association, the Utica German-American Alliance and the Carl Schurz Society when they were active here. He made several visits to his old home in Germany. He spent his summers at Canadarago Lake.
Mr. Witte was one of the organizers of the Merchants Bank which later became merged with the Fist Bank & Trust Company.
Since coming to Utica he was a member of St. Joseph's Church. He was a member of its Holy Name Society and an honorary member of St. Aloysius Society.
On Sept. 8, 1886, Mr. Witte married Miss Anna Goppert of this city. The celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary last September.
Besides his widow he leaves nine children, John A., of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Henry F., Fred M., Aloys C., George N., Frances A., Anna R., Joseph A., and Charles L., all of Utica and eight grandchildren. Utica Observer Dispatch, Tuesday, March 26, 1946
