Margaret Graf came to the U.S. before the end of May, 1869. She married George Hertel at St. Louis Catholic Church in Buffalo, NY on 22 May 1859. Together, they had 11 children.

When looking at the baptismal and other records of their children, sometimes her maiden name is listed as Graf, sometimes it is listed as Schonel. All dates though strongly show that it is the same person. Researchers in Germany found that she is the daughter of Simon Graf and Margaretha Schoenl. She was born illegitimately; sometimes she is listed with the surname of Schoenl, sometimes as Graf.

Margaret Hertel died at the age of 42. The funeral took place from St. Ann's Catholic Church in Buffalo, NY.

She is buried in a large corner lot that the Hertel's share with the Brachmann family. George and Margaret's daughter Margaret married Adam Brachmann after the death of her first husband, George Reis.
