William Henry Howard Sr. was born in Pennsylvania in 1836. William and his sister were raised by William and Cynthia Nutting of North East, Erie County, Pennsylvania. They were living with them in 1850.

William and Eliza's parents must have died. Their biological father may have been Levi Howard, who lived with his spouse and two sons and four daughters in the city of North East, Pennsyvania in 1840. The oldest son of Levi Howard was born between 1821 and 1825. Levi's daughter Eliza Jane was born in 1834 and the other three daughters were born as follows: one between 1821 and 1825, one between 1826 and 1830 and one between 1836 and 1840.

William married Elizabeth Spitzel or Spitzer/Spetzer on July 14, 1861 in West Springfield, Erie County, Pennsylvania. After his wife died on May 1, 1862, William enlisted in the Union Army, Company "K", 105th Regiment, Ohio Voluntary Infantry. William was a private. He enrolled on August 6, 1862 at Ashtabula, Ohio. He was mustered into service for three years on August 21, 1862 at Cleveland, Ohio by Captain Paxton, USA mustering Office. William Howard seved under Captain Bowerson. He was killed on Chaplin Hills, near Perryville, Kentucky on October 8, 1862. He was first buried at the Perryville Battlefield Site, but later his remains were moved to Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

William and Elizabeth (Spitzel) Howard had one son, William Henry Howard Jr., who was born on April 22, 1862 in Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, Ohio. William married Carrie Almeedie Cobb on May 28, 1885 in Tower City, Barnes County, North Dakota. They had three children, but only Edith Elizabeth Howard grew to adulthood. Edith Howard married James Henry Rawson on January 4,1911 in Carrington, North Dakota. They had two boys: James Howard Rawson (1911-1931) and Harry Edward Rawson (1922-1998).
