Mette Katrina Eriksen was born 15 April 1846 in Morkholt, Gaarslev Parish, Vejle County, Denmark to Soren William Eriksen and Bodil Kirstine (Boletta Christina) Kyhn. She was one of 6 children born to the couple. Siblings: Anne Mette (1839) Erik (1841) Hans (1844) Anna Marie (1849) and Maren (1856). She married Hans Henrick Mortensen in 1866 and they were the parents of 7 children. In 1872, Hans took advantage of a government plan whereby Danish settlers could obtain land in New Zealand by "clearing the bush" there. Hans and Mette emigrated with other families, disembarking at Napier, Hawkes Bay, on the North Island of New Zealand. She lived out the rest of her life in New Zealand. Hans died in Wairoa, New Zealand 21 September 1918. After Hans died, Mette moved to Napier where some of the children lived, no family members being left in Wairoa by then. She died in Napier, New Zealand in 1932 and is buried in "Park Island" cemetery which is located in the Ahuriri area.
