LOIS WILLIAMS MICKLE GOOKIN

Lois Jane Williams was born Nov. 5, 1909 in Chariton, Iowa to Milton Elbert and Nellie Edith (Moore) Williams. A farmer's daughter, she was very much at home on the farm, feeding pigs or helping with the harvest. Later, they moved from the farm to the edge of Chariton, still farm connected.

Lois graduated from Chariton High School and soon found a job as a switchboard operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. From there went to Des Moines and started working as a waitress. She did very well at it. One of her favorite customers was Ronald Reagan.

Next, she had an offer of marriage so she went to Kansas City and married Robert Mickle Aug. 31, 1928. Eventually, they settled in Bartlesville, Okla. Next, it was time for an addition to the family. Theodore Robert "Ted" Mickle joined their family Aug. 10, 1930. Several years later Richard Ernest "Dicky" Mickle joined their family. Eight years later, disaster hit and they lost Dicky in a drowning accident. May 22, 1952. He was only eight years old. On July 26, 1959, she was widowed by the death of her husband, Bob.

She found a job working as a cashier at a parking ramp. A few years later she met Arthur Gookin and they were married Sept. 20, 1968. She was widowed again June 18, 1980. During their marriage they lived in Chariton.

During this time, she became very active in her passion for quilt making and made many quilts, as well as more than 30 afghans and other needle work. She gave most of them away, with love, to her friends and family. She was well known as a quilter around the area, attending many shows, often winning blue ribbons. She also received a plaque for a quilt chosen as the people's choice at the Iowa State Fair.

Lois lost her eldest son, Ted, March 22, 1992.

On April 7, 2003, Lois gave up the battle against a seige of bad luck and old age. She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved her. God bless her and keep her memory alive.

Lois is survived by three grandsons, Glen Mickle of Virginia, Ron Mickle and Steve Mickle, both of California; several great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ernest Williams of New London, Iowa and Richard Williams of Lake Charles, La.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 11, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Chariton, with Pastor Gary DeGeest officiating. Music was provided by organist Marlene DeGeest and vocalist Shari DeBok.

Serving as bearers were Glenn Mickle, Ron Mickle, Steve Mickle, David Williams, Ricky Williams, Jon Gookin, Jerry Pierschbacher and Steve Mikesell. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
