James H. Winters, 80, who retired in 1933 after serving three terms as assessor in Decatur township, died at 4:15 pm Wednesday in his home, 267 W. William street. He had been ill for the past year.
Mr. Winters was born on a farm near Steubenville, Ohio, Feb. 26, 1859, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Winters. He married Daisey M. Born, Oct 4, 1899, in Ames, Iowa.
A resident of Decatur for 40 years Mr. Winters was a retired building contractor. He was three times elected assessor of Decatur township on the Republican ticket. At the expiration of his last term in 1933, he announced that he would not seek re-election. He served as deputy assessor for 10 years. He was a member of the First Methodist church.
Funeral services will be Saturday in the Brintlinger funeral home with burial in Fairlawn cemetery.
