elmer finished four years of college at Purdue University and maintained a B average while helping support his family. He completed a BSME (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering) degree in 1902. His senior thesis was "Commerical test of a 125 horse-power Whitfield Engine." In 1904 he was a member of the faculty of the Department of Practical Mechanics. His title was Assistant in Practical Mechanics.
He taught Mechanical drawing and woodworking first at Purdue and then at West Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio. After retiring from West Technical he worked at Merriman Instrument Co., in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was a non drinker, because he didn't want to be like his father who was an alcoholic. As a young boy he had to pull his father out of the local saloons.
