Her parents were George Gilbert and Mary Savage. George is buried in Ireland while Mary and all her children are buried in Chicago.
Jennie was the fourth child to leave Ireland arriving in Chicago around 1897. Jennie married Maurice Griffin in 1901, the same year her father died. By 1908 her mother and remaining siblings had all immigrated to the same Chicago neighborhood.
Five of the seven Gilbert girls (and their mother) would continue to live within blocks of each other (on Kimbark and Avalon) for the rest of their lives. Her sister Ann lived two doors down. Sister Julia married her husband's brother Frank and lived across the alley and next a third Griffin brother Edward.
