On the 1900 Census in Hancock County, Tennessee, her age was given as 4 yrs, on the 1910 Census in The Dalles, Oregon she said she was 12. On the 1920 Census she was 25. On Her death record it said she was born 11 Sep 1899.
She was youngest of 11 children in her family. She was young when her mother died in 1904. "I remember her and know I had not gone to school and she was bed ridden-died in MO -been there about 2 yrs from Tenn." Lula lived with her older sister Martha Jane & her husband John Fields for a while after her mother died. Later Lula sometimes lived with other people "working for keeps". "The family moved from MO to Oregon about 1909...You see I went out on my own at about 12, came to Spokane with a older friend about 1914, & was married that yr. to W. V. HasHagen (a farmer) at Odessa, a few miles from here. He died in 1926 leaving me with 2 small children (had lost farms) left destitute-raised the children worked-was widow, till 1968-married John B. Cress...".
LuLa died at Kimberly Rest Home in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho -near where her daughter Maxine lived at the time.
