John Edward (Ed) Balthrop, Jr., MD, formerly of Gulf Breeze, FL, died peacefully in Oak Ridge, TN on Thursday, April 14, 2011. Born in Mobile, AL in 1919, Dr. Balthrop graduated from Spring Hill College in 1940 and from the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham in 1951. A decorated soldier (Bronze Star, Purple Heart) Dr. Balthrop served four years in the Pacific theater during World War II and was separated from the US Army as a First Lieutenant. He was predeceased in 1994 by his beloved wife, Ellen Costello, whom he met and married in New South Wales, Australia, shortly after the end of WWII. He is survived by nine children: Paul (Beth Switzer) Balthrop, Bridget (Jack) Morton, Mary Alda Balthrop (Van Lewis), John Balthrop, Kathleen (Tom) Havener, Patrick (Mariterese) Balthrop, Sheila (Jim) Michel, Stacy Flood, and Denise (Barney) Cassidy; three sisters: Sr. Mary Alda Balthrop, RSM, Mary Jean Balthrop, and Joan (Jim) Browning); twenty-eight grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Dr. Balthrop interned in Mobile, AL and served a residency at Escambia General Hospital in Pensacola, FL. He began the general practice of medicine in Pensacola in 1952. Dr. Balthrop welcomed all patients to his care, and he became a civil rights pioneer by integrating his waiting room in Pensacola during the 1950's. With the help of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Sisters of St. Francis, he ran a free maternity clinic at Our Lady of Angels Hospital, where thousands of uninsured women received pre-natal care and safe deliveries during the 1950's and 60's. He retired from the practice of medicine in 1989.

Dr. Balthrop was a scholar who was valedictorian of his high school, college, and medical school classes. He was dedicated to literature and philosophy and was as avid in his pursuit of these disciplines as in every other part of his life. He began writing at age 15 and considered poetry his true vocation; he wrote until the day he died, completing over 100 poems and short stories.

Dr. Balthrop was also a lifelong seeker of social justice, a quiet activist for racial equality, and a firm supporter of Catholic education. He volunteered for many years as team physician for Pensacola Catholic High and Escambia High School athletic teams. In his final years, he sponsored sports teams for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Oak Ridge, TN and was an avid fan of Jefferson Middle and Oak Ridge High School (TN) Athletics.
