The Genealogy of the Cowles Families in America (C.D. Cowles, 1927, p168): "Moses Cowles' house was burned, October, 1776 and his three children were burned to death in it. The oldest was five years old...The mother was never well after this sorrowful event. She and her last child died on the day of its birth."
Moses Cowles Sr.'s granddaughter, Maria (Cowles) Hand (#61054819) recalls "I have frequently heard them tell over the sad story while tears ran down their cheeks & we children could not help crying too. Never were brothers more family united in Christian bonds than were these two–Moses & Asa. Their hopes, their aims, their fears were one."
