Obituary for Jewel "Everett" Oliver

Everett Jewel Oliver of Natchitoches, Louisiana passed away at his home the morning of May 1, 2011, his 82nd birthday, following his battle with cancer.

Everett was born on May 1, 1929 in Winnsboro, Louisiana to Jewel and Annie Lee Oliver. He married Opal Hicks on July 17, 1948 in Monroe, Louisiana. Prior to moving to Natchitoches in August of 1971, Everett and Opal lived in Delhi, Louisiana where he owned a car dealership and also sold mobile homes. After moving to Natchitoches, he became the General Manager of Sherwood Homes and later built and managed a modular home plant and carpet store in Natchitoches as well as a mobile home supply and carpet store in Broussard, Louisiana. Some of his favorite pastimes were any type of construction around his home and restoring old cars. The construction usually consisted of adding on another room to his home with the help of his sons and sons-in-law.

Everett is survived by his loving wife of almost 63 years, Opal Oliver; children, Ronnie Oliver of Natchitoches; Danny Oliver and wife, Kim, of Natchitoches; Angie Oliver Jones and husband, Dennis, of Rockwall, Texas; Tom Oliver and wife, Shalinda, of Frisco, Texas; Larry Oliver of Natchitoches, Suzanne Oliver Jackson and husband, Clyde, of Fayetteville, Arkansas and his brother, Doyle Oliver and wife, Faye of Natchitoches. He is also survived by grandchildren, Rhonda Oliver of Jackson, Mississippi; Lisa Oliver Fortenberry and husband, Fount, of Provencal; Kayla Oliver Marsh and husband, Joe, of Transylvania; Melissa Oliver Coutee of Natchitoches; Jeffery Jones of Allen, Texas; Jason Oliver and wife, Nicole, of Austin, Texas; Priscilla Oliver of Natchitoches; James Jones of Allen, Texas; Ana-Alicia Guilliams Moritz and husband, Eric, of Fate, Texas; Danielle Oliver of Natchitoches; Zack Guilliams of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and Rachel Oliver of Natchitoches. Everett was also the great-grandfather to Taylor Oliver; Mckenzi Howard; Nicholas Franklin; Megan, Anna Claire and Joey Marsh; Ashley and Joshua Fortenberry; Emma Jones and Hunter and Kaelyn Coutee. He also leaves behind a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and many dear friends.

Everett was predeceased by brother, Jewel Oliver, Jr., who passed away at birth on September 16, 1927; father, Jewel Oliver, Sr. who passed away on July 30, 1970 and mother, Annie Lee Oliver who passed away on January 13, 1996.

Visitation will be at First Baptist Church, 508 Second Street, Natchitoches, Louisiana on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 from 5 PM to 8 PM. Services will be at 10 AM, on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Natchitoches. Officiating will be Reverend Thomas Brooks, long time friend and pastor of Lighthouse Non-denominational Church in Carthage, Mississippi, and Reverend Tommy Rush, pastor of First Baptist Church, Natchitoches.

Pall Bearers will be Zack Guilliams, Mike Guilliams, Mike Oliver, Bruce Wallace, Joe Thibodeaux, Richard Powell, Larry Pace, and James Dodd. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Carl Stuckey, Dr. Kevin Sittig and Dr. Larry Burke.

Following the service, interment will be at Faith Memorial Cemetery on Hwy. 17 South in Delhi, Louisiana. Magnolia Funeral Home in Alexandria, Louisiana is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Hospice of Natchitoches, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

The family of Everett Oliver would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Kevin Sittig who was not only the doctor who took such great care of Dad in his later years, but who also became a great friend to our family. He played a tremendous role in making sure Dad was well taken care of with any illness he had. I don't know what we would have done without him. We would also like to thank Hospice of Natchitoches for the loving way they cared for Dad allowing him to remain in his home where he was most comfortable, where his family could be with him day and night during his last days and where he could pass with dignity on his terms. It also goes without saying that we are so grateful to all the wonderful friends that were so willing to step in and help in any way they could whether it was taking Dad to Shreveport for his appointments, giving Mom the hugs she needed or just sitting with Dad as he talked hours on end about "the good times".

There are no words that can adequately describe the love we had for our dad or the pain that is in our hearts. He was an amazing husband, dad, brother and papaw and will be missed more than he could have ever imagined. We love you Dad and will see you again one day.
