U.S. Congressman. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army and attained the rank of Colonel of the Eighth Infantry Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers. He was wounded in battles at Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, and Deep Bottom. He served as a South Carolina State Representative in 1863, and from 1865 to 1866. In 1887, he was a member of the first board of trustees of what would later become Clemson University, and was the first person elected president of South Carolina's Farmers Alliance in 1888. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Congress for the Sixth District on November 4, 1890. He died while in office.
