Ellis D. Winslow
BENNINGTON - Ellis D. "Ellie" Winslow, 93, died Dec. 7, 2009, at his residence, following a brief illness.
He was born in Bennington June 26, 1916, the son of Edward and Annette (Griffis) Winslow.
He was a 1934 graduate of Bennington High School.
Mr. Winslow was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Western Pacific and the Philippines. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He married the former Ann F. O'Toole June 19, 1937, in Bennington.
In earlier years, he was employed at Fillmore Farms. In 1939, he went to work as a district agent for Prudential Insurance Co., retiring in 1976.
Mr. Winslow served as foreman and treasurer of Putnam Hose Fire Department. He also served on the Selective Service Board, the Board of Civil Authority and was a justice of the peace. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 307, Bennington Lodge of Elks 567, Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and the Bennington Club.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, winters in Florida playing golf and travel to Canada.
Survivors include his wife and two daughters, Joan Foster and Carol Harbour, all of Bennington; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Marian Davis, and five brothers, Duane, Edward, Carleton, Bernard and Richard Winslow.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home where friends may call from noon prior to the service.
Burial with military honors will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.
