Hulda Amelia Katherina Raile, 92 years and 6 months old, a lifelong resident of this area, died in St. Francis on the morning of October 6, 2009. She was the second of five children born to David and Sophia (Lemke) Semler. She was born March 14, 1917, on the family farm in Cheyenne County, between St. Francis and Haigler, Nebraska.

Hulda's first few years of elementary education were in both English and German, and along with regular schooling she had religious training. She then attended the Jacqua School while staying with the Reverend and Mrs. A. L. Hoelman. She graduated 8th grade from Hillcrest School.

She was baptized April 5, 1917, by Reverend Otto C. J. Keller and was confirmed May 24, 1931, by the Reverend Borghshots in the Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel Church, which was located five miles North of the home place in Cheyenne County. In 1988 the church was relocated to St. Francis on highway 36 and is known as "Ye Olde Country Church".

Before marriage, Hulda did house work and ironing for several people. She worked for John and Bertha Kamla in their grocery store and in their home in Haigler, DeRoy and Alice Danielson in their home, Matilda Kamla on the farm, Dr. Robert Buchanan and Dr. Graham in their homes in Wray, Colorado, and also helped Emma Rach cook for thrashers.

In the late 1930s, Hulda met and became acquainted with Albert Raile when her mother, Sohpia Semler, had visited Bert's mother Katherine Raile, to purchase some hatching eggs. After that Bert paid her a visit when she was working for the Danielson's and the courting began.

On November 21, 1940, Hulda was married to Albert Emil Raile (known to many as Bert) by the Reverend A. L. Besal at th esame church she was baptized and confirmed in, and they shared their lives together for 37 years. To this blessed union three children were born: Verlin, Verla, and Delbert. Preceding her in death were her husband Albert, parents David and Sophia Semler, brother Carl, sisters Tillie Schlepp and Lucille Crouse.

Hulda lived on the farm for 3 1/2 years after Bert's death, then moved to town in 1980. After moving to town she did babysitting and also worked in the Laundry at the Good Samaritan Village for 8 years. When she retired she continued to do volunteer work at the Village which included baking on Tuesdays and manicures on Fridays. When she was available, she also helped with other activities.

She loved her garden and flowers and also did beautiful crocheting and quilting. She was active in her church and the United Methodist Women organization.

Those that survive her are Verlin "Duke" (Lavonne) Raile, Lakefield, Minnesota; Verla (Art) Inness, Denver, Colorado; and Delbert (Marilyn) Raile, Saint Francis. Grandchildren include Delwin Inness (Cheryl Copeland), Lynnwood, Washington; Tish Inness (Earl Graham), Olathe, Kansas; and Chad (Angie) Raile, Los Angeles, California; Cody (Samantha Zweygardt) Raile, Nick and Matt Raile, Saint Francis.
