U.S. Congressman. He was educated in England, returned to America, studied law, was admitted to the bar at Stewart County, Tennessee, in 1821 and was clerk of the circuit court of Stewart County, (1822-25), He was a member of the Tennessee Legislature, (1825-27) and served as attorney general of the sixteenth judicial circuit of Tennessee, in 1826. In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress, serving until 1833. An unsuccessful candidate for re-election, he served as judge of the ninth judicial circuit of Tennessee, (1845-61).
