David (Poppy) Rodney Light, age 76, of Murphy, NC passed away Monday, April 4, 2011 in Buncombe County, NC.
He was a native of Hosensock, PA and the son of the late Earl Sylvester and Hattie Mae Hartung Light. David was in the Air Force and retired from the United States Post Office. He was a member of Ranger Baptist Church. His ministry was providing bake goods, jelly and jams to the widows and local nursing homes. Poppy enjoyed making crafts for family and friends and he always found the best bargains in town. He was a great family provider, a devoted father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Marsha Moore Light who passed away in December of 2009.
He is survived by three daughters, Pamela Light Gonzalez and her husband, Dennis, of Mineral Bluff, GA, Debbie Light Claxon of Tampa, FL and Karen Light Cooper and her husband, Rev. Jim Cooper of Conover, NC; one brother, Delmont Light and his wife, Rose of Murphy, NC; one sister, June Freck of Clayton, New Jersey; 10 grandchildren, one great granddaughter and one great grandson.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Ranger Baptist Church. Rev. L.B. Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post, #10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post #96 and D.A.V. Chapter #73, Hayesville American Legion Post 532 and Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison-Bristol). Pallbearers will be Justin Smith, Jimmy Cooper, Robert Haun, Kristina Haun, Kelli Cooper, Katie Cooper, Gil Diaz and John Concepcion. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Hedrick and Bob Baker.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the church.
