TORREY RESIDENT KILLED BY ACCIDENTAL GUNSHOT
Torrey Jan, 18 -- While putting his rifle away after having shot a coyote, D. N. Hickman, one of Wayne County's leading citizens was killed by the accidental discharge of the gun. The charge struck him full in the face and death was apparently instantaneous.
Mr. Hickman had gone out to do his morning chores. Seeing a coyote that had been bothering for some nights past he secured the rifle, an old fashioned needle gun, and went in pursuit. Returning to the corral he was about to place the rifle in the corner of the corral when the needle was struck by the side of the fence, discharging the lead. The family, hearing the shot supposed he was still shooting at the coyote and no one went out until sometime later when he did not return when his wife was going to call him for breakfast found the body. Mr. Hickman was 62 years of age, having lived in Wayne County the past 15 years. Since coming here he has been prominent in nearly every movement in a public nature. AS bishop of Torrey he was highly esteemed and though he resigned this position sometime ago, he continued an able adviser and kind helper to the people. During the recent epidemic of influenza, he went repeatedly to those afflicted and administered to their needs, both in a spiritual and a temporal manner. As county commissioner for several years he served the county and after leaving office, continued a keen worker for the community uplift of this section. The deceased is survived by his widow and seven children.
