U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1815, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1818 and commenced practice in Charleston, South Carolina. He was a member of the Charleston City Council and served in the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1826-29, 32-33). In 1839, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1851. After leaving Congress, he practiced law in San Francisco, California, returned to South Carolina in 1861 and was appointed a commissioner of the State to confer with the Federal Government, serving until his death.
