In the days before the advent of birth
certificates, this baby's mother and father
always argued about what to name each of
their children. They had *not* decided on
a name for this boy when the baby died.

On one occasion when he was in his crib, a
piece of soot landed on his head. After that,
his brothers and sisters called him Smut, or
sometimes Smokey. That was the only name
he ever had, and thus Smut was the name put
on his gravestone. Smut was the youngest of
this couples' nine children.
