Born in Winchester, Virginia on October 29, 1861 and died on August 23, 1862.
Elizabeth "Bessie" McDonald was the youngest child of Cornelia Peake McDonald and Colonel Angus McDonald. Born during the early years of the Civil War, she became the beacon of hope and joy for her family as they endured much suffering and loss. In "A Diary with Reminiscences of the War and Refugee Life", Cornelia describes the sweet, bright, blue eyes and joyful smile of her baby. Bessie became ill in the summer of 1862 as many Union troops were encamped around the family home. She died peacefully in the arms of her mother, surrounded by her brothers and sister.
Bessie was originally buried next to her Uncle Edward McDonald at the Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia. In April, 1932 her remains were moved to the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia to be laid beside her parents and her brother, Allan McDonald. The marker was also moved to the new grave, having been initially placed at her grave in 1875 by her mother.
