Kingston True Republican October 9, 1897
On Saturday last, at about 7 o'clock in the morning James Strawn, sr., received the summons from the Grim Reaper and passed quietly to the home beyond. He had been in feeble health for a long time, but appeared no worse than common, and his death was a great shock to the wife who had cared for him all through his illness. James Strawn was born at Harvage, Upper Canada, April 9, 1826. When 13 years of age, he came with his parents to Harrison, Winnebago County, Ill. In the spring of 1844 he came to Kingston, this county, and on March 18, 1846, was united in marriage to Louisa Wood, and settled in the place which had ever since been their home. Four sons were the fruit of this union: Joseph Hiram, who gave his life for his country at the battle of Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Ga.; James A., who lives within a half mile of the old home, and Jacob A. Strawn, whose farm lies just across the road. Some 19 years ago Mr. Strawn was converted, and since that time has lived a life of exemplary Christianity. The writer has been acquainted with him for many years, and never heard him speak a slighting word of anyone, but their good qualities he always dwelt upon. Besides his immediate relatives he leaves a large number of warm friends. The funeral took place from the Flora church, and the remains were interred in the cemetery adjoining.
