Mr. Carlton left Hoosick, NY about 1813 and went to Wyoming County, NY, where he bought land on the south part of Middlebury Hill and farmed and raised sheep. His property came to be known as "Carlton Hill" because of the number of his sons who settled in the area. A grandson, writing about the family, describes him as " A man of independent spirit but unusually kind and obliging. A faithful Christian and a remarkably fine singer. A man of powerful physique and strength.

He was a son of Kimball & Sarah (Kingsbury) Carlton. About 1798 he married Lois Van Surdaam. He was the father of 10 children; Ira Carlton, Locivy Carlton, Guy Carlton, Albert Carlton, Sylvia Carlton, Younglove Carlton, Jacob Carlton, Jane Carlton, Alfonso Carlton and Franklin Carlton
