SHEFFIELD - John Francis Sullivan Jr., 83, of Sheffield passed away Saturday, April 23, 2011, in Princeton, Ill.

John was born June 27, 1927, in Kewanee to John and Edna (Maher) Sullivan. He married Donna (Coggins) at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheffield on Sept. 20, 1952. She passed away on June 19, 1969.

He attended Sheffield schools and served in the U.S. Army after graduation. He then returned to Sheffield, where he worked as an electrician and was an involved member of the community. He was employed by the Peabody Coal Company, owned and operated the Sullivan Electric Company with his wife, Donna, and eventually was employed by and retired from the Barcol Overdoor Company.

He served on the Village Board, was a Trustee of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, a member of the Father P. Hand Council of the Knights of Columbus, and belonged to the American Legion and the Sheffield Fire Department. He also volunteered regularly for the American Cancer Society and at the Illinois Veterans Home in LaSalle. John was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan and greatly enjoyed watching and listening to his boys of summer. He was also a tremendous supporter of his grandchildren and attended hundreds of activities and athletic events at Annawan, Bureau Valley and Wethersfield high schools. He greatly valued his Catholic faith, his family and his friends.

Survivors include his son, Patrick (Eileen) Sullivan of Kewanee; five daughters, Barbara Sullivan of Springfield, Connie (Dave) Hahne of Sheffield, Linda (Duane) Rakestraw of Annawan, Diane Sullivan of Downers Grove and Jennifer Sullivan of Placitas, N.M.; grandchildren, Katie (Hahne) Johnson of Walnut, Abby Hahne of Naperville, TJ Hahne of Bloomington, Melissa (Sullivan) Jackson of Geneseo, Cassandra Sullivan of Chicago, Ty Rakestraw of Peoria and Dylan Rakestraw of Champaign; and great-grandchildren, Coggin Johnson and Ellie Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Thomas; his parents; and his brother, William, and sister, Mary.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheffield. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Sheffield, with military honors by Sheffield American Legion. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with a rosary scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Sheffield-Mineral Rescue Unit or to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
