Joseph Alred killed by train at Barrow- Body of Former Resident of Roodhouse Found Early Thursday on Burlington Right of Way-Was Walking the Tracks
Joseph "Cott" Alred, a Barrow resident who recently removed from Roodhouse, was killed by a Burlington freight and his body was found on the right of way one quarter of a mile south of the depot at Barrow early Thursday morning. The body was lying on the west side of the tracks, with a gash in his head and right arm and from the position in which the man was found it is thought that he was sitting on the ties at the side of the rail and was struck by the train in passing. Alred left Barrow about 5:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and went to Roodhouse. He was seen at West Roodhouse just before midnight and left there for Barrow a short time before the north bound passenger train. Two freights passed thru Barrow later in the night and it was doubtless one of these that brought death to Alred. A half-emptied bottle of Jamaica ginger was found upon the body.
The coroner of Greene County was notified and arrived Thursday forenoon when an inquest was returned in keeping with the facts as stated. Alred is survived by a wife and five children.
