Born in Benwick, Cambridgeshire, John came to the US in 1866 at the age of 35.

John married Mary Knowles 9 Nov 1857 at Dalton-in-Furness, St Mary. He was then shown as widowed, using his mother's maiden name, Bester. John and Mary had 5 children: John (born Dalton-in-Furness), Thomas (born in Scotland), Henry, Charles, Elizabeth and Robert.

Mary's daughter, Mary Jane Wilcox was living with them in 1861 in Dalton-in-Furness when she was also shown as Bester. The family moved to Scotland, where the son, Thomas was born in 1863 in Auchterderran, Fife as Thomas Bester.

The Elgin Courier 19 Sep 1862 reported that John Bester was fined for stealing turnips, showing him as a navvy.

The family appeared in Ridgeway by 1870 as Hodom. In 1870, John's son, Thomas was with his mother, Edis who had remarried to John Scarborough. John's mother had married John Scarborough in 1847 in Cambridgeshire and they were living in March, Cambridgeshire in 1851, emigrating to Ridgeway in 1853.

After Mary died John married Juliette Stickney.
