His family called him by his middle name Martin. (His father was also named Edmond.) Husband of Sallie Elizabeth Liles (She is buried at Wright's Cemetery in Scotland County.) E. Martin Hearn lived in Rockingham and operated a dray as his self employment. A dray was a horse drawn freight wagon. He transported freight from the cotton/weaving mills in Rockingham to the railroad, and from the railroads to the mills. He died at about age 42 due to "the bloody flux", as told by his son Zeb Vance Hearn, Sr.
