Her obituary in the Platteville Witness published on 21 May 1913 stated she was born 21 Oct 1823 in Sparta, New York. Maria Wheeler married Rufus Crippen on 17 Dec 1846 in Walworth County, Wisconsin. She was the mother of 8 children according to the 1910 census with 6 living her obituary stated one died in infancy. Known children were; Effie A., Emma, Mary Augusta, Frederick W., Rufus Emmett, Benjamin B., and Jennie L. Crippen.
