Elizabeth Clemens
TERRA BELLA - Services for former newspaper publisher Elizabeth "Betsy" Clemens, 102, will be held Friday in Constantine, Mich. Mrs. Clemens died Sunday after a short illness.
She and her late husband, Earl Clemens, started the Terra Bella News in 1911. Mrs Clemens continued to operate the paper after her husband's death in 1943.
Mrs. Clemens sold the paper in 1945 to Forest Smith.
In addition to the newspaper, she and her husband also owned and operated the Clemens Insurance Co. Mrs. Clemens sold the company in 1966.
The Clemenses also founded the Rhyolite Newspaper in Rhyolite, Nev. Mrs. Clemens authored a book published in 1939, "Life in the Ghost Town of Rhyolite."
She was born in Michigan and moved to Terra Bella in 1911.
Mrs. Clemens was featured in last week's quiz on famous women in Tulare County. She was listed as the first woman publisher in the county.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Constantine, Mich.
Local funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Loyd Chapel.
