"After lying for nine days unconscious, the result of a stroke of paralysis, death came to Mrs. John Mclean quietly and painlessly last Tuesday afternoon.
In her death Cariboo loses one of its oldest residents, and Quesnel its most respected citizen. Arriving in Quesnel from England in 1875, she continually resided here from that time on. From the time of her arrival until 1895 she ably assisted her late husband in the management of the Occidental Hotel, and no hostelry was ever more popular with the public than was this, the first public stopping place in the town. Mr. and Mrs. McLean disposed of their business in 1895, and have since lived in retirement in Quesnel.
A lady of retiring disposition and a kindly personality, she was highly respected by a wide circle of friends; always interested in the work of the Church, many of the local residents will remember her as their Sunday School teacher before a regular pastor was stationed here. Since the establishment of' the Presbyterian Church here she has been its staunchest supporter, not only as a devout member, but as well with substantial material assistance. She was pre-deceased nearly five years by her husband, who was one of the party of five who first struck gold on Antler Creek early in 1860.
No relatives reside in Canada; A surviving sister lives in Grimsby, England, and another in Australia. At the time of her death she was in her 82nd year, and had lived in this town for forty-five years.
The funeral occurred on Wednesday afternoon, the remains being taken to the Presbyterian Church, and from thence to the local cemetery where interment was made in the family plot. Rev. Mr. Petrie conducted the service, assisted by Rev. Major White. The pallbearers were Messrs. J. A. Fraser, Robert Middleton, James Craig, Stephen L. Hilborn, Harry Moffat and Chas. H. Allison.
A memorial service in memory of the deceased lady will be held in the Presbyterian Church tomorrow, at 7.30 p.m."

Married John McLean 16 May 1881 at Barkerville District.
