Peppery maverick of the munitions-making clan, longtime champion of child welfare, women's suffrage, and the labor movement. She attended private school in Philadelphia and as an act of defiance, she refused to have a coming-out party typical of other debutantes. She joined the board of the Children's Free Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. In Ohio, she worked with Elizabeth Hauser to include woman suffrage in the new state constitution in 1910. She posed for a full-face photograph publicizing the Votes for Women pageant and parade in New York City and advocated pro-labor policies in the boardroom of the Bethlehem Steel Co. as well as being a signer of a proxy statement against Montgomery Ward's labor policies.
