Mrs Lucy McKnight dies in Atlanta; Burial in Evergreen
Mrs Lucy Gumm McKnight, 80, former resident of Murfreesboro, and a great-aunt to movie star Judy Garland. was buried here Thursday. Mrs McKnight, widow of C D McKnight, died Monday night at her home in Atlanta, Georgia. Prayer services were held in Atlanta and the body arrived her Wednesday. The daughter of J A and Martha Wade Gumm, she was born and reared here. Her husband was of a local family, and they lived here for several years, finally moving to Virginia. He died five years ago, and was buried in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery here. Mrs McKnight had spend the months of August here with her sister, Mrs E T Rion for the past few summers until this year when she was too feeble to make the trip. She was related to movie star Judy Garland through her nephew who was the actress's father. Judy Garland's real name was Frances Gumm and her father was born at Murfreesboro. The funeral services were at the home of Mrs Rion at 330 East Lytle Street with the Rev. Dr. E W Williams and the Rev. L S Sidberry officiating. Burial was in Evergreen by her husband.
Surviving are three sons; Neal, of Atlanta; Hershel, of Pittsburg; and Clare, of Florida; and two sisters, Mrs Rion and Mrs H L Fox, both of Murfreesboro. The sons were all her for the funeral. Pallbearers were C B Bell, J B Jones, W T Gerhardt, Sam Cox, Frank Burgdorf, W A Miles, J W Huggins Sr, and Joe Sanders. Woodfin and Moore directed funeral arrangements.
