In 1940, Gladys was an active member of the Women's Ambulance Safety Patrol Unit #1 Rockford Illinois. W.A.S.P. were trained for a possible Homeland or natural disaster. They learned to drive & maintain the ambulances; able to change oil, tires & lube the chassis. They learned first aid, canteen cooking, convoy driving, map reading & had rifle training. The W.A.S.P. concept spread coast to coast in 17 communities in 15 states. info: [email protected]
Gladys worked at the Ida Public Library in Belvidere, retiring in 1984. She was a member of St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary & First UMC.
