Mararet was probably named after the popular Queen of Italy at the time, La Regina Margherita.
Margherita in the Italian language means Daisy, the flower.
She had the following siblings:
*Maria, married name Calcagno
*Gaspare
*Felicia, married name Minio
*Vincenzo
*Giuseppe
She was the youngest of the family and grew up in Bronte. All of her family except her oldest sister Maria went to live in the USA.
In Oct. 1910 her father Serafino immigrated to the USA with the plan for Margaret and her mother to come over at a later date. Sadly her father became very ill soon after arriving in Jamestown,NY and died that same month on Oct. 29th.
With help from family at the age of 14 she and her mother Nunziata immigrated to the USA. They arrived at Ellis Island on July 8th 1913. They went to Jamestown, NY and joined Margaret's older brother Gaspare who had settled there years before.
In Feb. of 1918, in Jamestown, Margaret married distant cousin Antonino Zerbo who was also from Bronte, Sicily.
And as was the Italian custom their children were named after their grandparents and relatives :
*James
*Russell J.
*Anthony, Jr.
*Mary L.
