James John Whitney Jr., 90, passed away on April 22, 2011, after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Seattle, Wash., to James John Whitney Sr. and Pearl Whitney. He graduated from high school in Seattle prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy and later graduated from Okaloosa Walton Junior College in April 1974. James John Whitney Jr. served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1961, attaining the rank of senior chief petty officer. On Aug. 16, 1952, he married Jeanne Mistretta.
Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he resided in Poquito Bayou, Shalimar, Fla. He continued to work in Civil Service at Eglin Air Force Base for another 21 years until his retirement in 1984.
James John Whitney Jr. was an active member of the local community in the Fort Walton Beach, Fla., area. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, BPOE Lodge 1795, American Legion Post 235, DAV, Fleet Reserve Association Pensacola Branch 22 and Eglin Air Force Base Enlisted Club.
James John Whitney Jr. will be especially remembered for being a selfless community volunteer always willing to help out and was recognized as the Elk of the Year in 1988-1989.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Marie Whitney; daughter, Yvonne Marie Blum; sons, Patrick Francis Whitney, James John Whitney III, Robert Alfred Whitney and Michael Brian Whitney; as well as nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He also has three surviving sisters, Dorothy Keown, Lucille Bartels and Janice Lockwood.
