He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army Air Corp as a B-25 pilot.
He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Maryland and was founder and president of
Master Door Company of Atlanta and Roanoke, Ala. He was chairman of the Board of
Gossen Corporation, Milwaukee, Wis., cofounder of Doors Units of Georgia, Inc. and
Trimline Sales Company of Marietta, and president of MID, Incorporated of Atlanta.
He was a member of the Cheokee Town and County Club, Atlanta and the Sea Island Golf
Club.
An avid golfer all his life, he played on and captained the University of Maryland golf
team. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. For more than 53 years, many
of his happiest moments were spent with his children and grandchildren. "Papa," as he was
affectionately known by all the family, was the center of the family's focus because he
centered his attention on each other member of his family.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Wenger Butterfield, whom he married Jan. 19, 1946; a son,
Frank Merz Butterfield Jr. of Milwaukee; a daughter, Cynthia Butterfield Glover of
Noonan, Ga.; five grandchildren; a sister, Margaret B. Seininger of Charlotte, N.C. and
two brothers: Sidney D. Butterfield Jr. of South Bethany, Del. and James R. Butterfield of
Rockland, Md. and Bemus Point.
A memorial service was held Oct. 10, 2000, in St. William's Catholic Church in St.
Simons Island. Interment was in Christ Church, Frederica, St. Simons Island.
