Robert received a BA and MA in Chemistry from the University of Missouri and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He was a professor of chemistry at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR; then he worked for the Monsanto Company in St. Louis, MO; then he worked for Procter and Gamble Company in Cincinnati, OH. He was instrumental in developing the first synthetic detergent, Dreft, that became the foundation of for the detergent industry in the 1930s. He later became Director of Research and Development.
He married Cora Alice Campbell in Klamath Falls, OR, on July 1, 1918. They had met at Oregon State University. They moved to Cincinnati, OH. They were members of the Presbyterian Church where Robert was an Elder.
Robert and Cora had two children: Robert Campbell Duncan and Helen Joye (Fay, Bower). Cora died young in 1927.
Robert married Grace Greenwood in 1931. She died in 1968. His third wife was Rachael Churches Kooyman, a widow. He preceded her in death.
