John was born on April 8, 1904 in Douglas County Colorado to Elmer and Olga Decker Anderson. He attended Douglas County schools to the tenth grade. He grew up on a farm and helped his parents with the work necessary.

In 1924 he joined the Navy. John's Navy service was from April 2, 1924 to April 2, 1928. During that time he served on the U.S.S. Argonne, U.S.S. Huron, U.S.S. California, U.S.S. Melville, U.S.S. Pope and he was honorably discharged from the U.S.S. Holland as Fireman First Class.

After his Navy service he worked for the railroad at Colorado Springs and Fountain Colorado. He worked there until July of 1929 when he returned to Douglas County, lived with his parents and worked for the County Road Department.

He married Evelyn Anglemyer on March 2, 1930 in Englewood Colorado and they made their first home in Elbert County Colorado. Together they had ten children.

In 1937 the family moved to Denver and in 1944 the "Manhattan Project" took them to Washington State. He spent the remainder of his working years in Richland, Washington working as a Power Plant Operator at Hanford. After retirement in September 1967 he moved to Centralia Washington and later Chehalis. In failing health, shortly before his death in 1988, he moved to Bothell, Washington. He died on January 9, 1988 and is buried in Claquato Cemetery at Chehalis Washington.
