Eulyse McCown Smith went to be with the Lord on April 23, 2011, at the age of 92. He was born on October 31, 1918 in Tippah County, MS to Walter B. Smith and Roxie McCown Smith. He graduated from Whitehaven High School and State Teachers College, now known as University of Memphis. He received his law degree at the University of Texas in Austin. Following law school he enlisted in the Unites States Air Force and received his honorable discharge as Staff Sgt. A practicing attorney in Memphis for more than sixty years, he was a member of the Memphis and Shelby County Bar Association and served on its board of directors. He was licensed to practice in the State of Tennessee and was admitted to the United States Federal District Court for the Western District, the Sixth District Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Tennessee and the United States Supreme Court. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church serving on the vestry multiple terms and as Senior Warden. He was a founding member of the Men's Club at St. John's and regularly attended the annual Episcopal Men's Conference at Dubose in Monteagle TN. Having grown up on a family farm as one of fourteen children, he never lost his love of the land and continued to actively farm and manage land in TN, MS, and AR. However, his most valuable gift to his family as father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, was his love of the Lord as written in his own words in an article entitled "What My Religion Means To Me" and published in the Memphis Press-Scimitar on August 5, 1961: "My religion is a very personal thing in my life, yet something I am happy to share each day with my family, friends, and my fellow man. Without it, I am less than whole. This wonderful thing gives my life balance and stability. It offers to me a way of life, and an opportunity to know love, courage, and an abiding faith in the future. God has given to man an intellect, thereby enabling him to choose for himself whether or not he will walk in His light. My religion is the great force which sustains and strengthens my desire to do His will and thru it I am continually seeking the peace of God that passeth all understanding." He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Anne Laurie Germaine Smith. He is survived by his three children, Anne Germaine Smith Speer, James McCown Smith (Lela), and Merideth Lane Smith Arnold (Ben); eight grandchildren, Christopher McCown Speer (Ciera) of Portland, OR, Anne Arnold Williams (Campbell) of Dallas, TX, James McCown Smith, Jr. (Caroline), Lane Arnold Clanton (Ben), Mollie Speer Baird (Wilson), Lela Crump Smith of Charlotte, NC, Robert Lewis Speer, Benjamin Humphreys Arnold, III; and six great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brothers Wade Smith, Russell Smith, and Eugene Smith; and his sister, Margaret Smith Bence. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in the Parish Hall of St John's Episcopal Church, 3245 Central Ave, Memphis, TN, 38111, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at the Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. John's Episcopal Church, 3245 Central Ave, Memphis, TN, 38111.
