He was the son of Daniel "Dan" Keeling and Mary Jaeger (probably Jäger) of Waldeck, Germany (Prussia).

Since Dan and family lived in Saint Francois Co. from 1850 to after 1870, it seemed logical Adam was born here. However, the death certificate of his daughter, Emma, specifically establishes both his and her births at Doe Run.

Adam first married Rosula "Rosie" LeGrande of France.

His second wife, whom he widowed in 1920, was Dicey Caroline Hammers, daughter of Reuben "Rube" Hammers and Edna "Edney" (Huddleston) Anderson.
