Funeral services for William Clifford Wood, Sr., 74, of Columbia will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Northeast Presbyterian Church with Dr. George Crow officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 pm at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Ware Shoals, SC. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Kornegay & Moseley Funeral Home, 4645 Hard Scrabble Rd. Columbia. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Christian Ministries International of Columbia, SC c/o Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Rd. Columbia, SC 29223 or to Emmanuel College, New Campus Entrance Project, 181 Spring Street, Franklin Springs, Ga. 30639.


Mr. Wood died Tuesday, April 19, 2011 in Paris, TX. Born in Ware Shoals, SC, he was the son of the late Catherine Clifford and Jeff Holmes Wood, Sr. Mr. Wood graduated from Ware Shoals High School, attended Presbyterian College and Georgia State University and received his A.A. Degree from Emmanuel College, Franklin Springs, GA. He served in the US Army from 1959-1962 and was stationed at Ft. McNair in Washington D.C. Mr. Wood worked approximately 35 years as a loss prevention specialist with Great American Insurance Company. He and his family lived in Smyrna, GA, New Hartford, CT, Flower Mound, TX, Frederick, MD and Conyers, GA until his retirement in 1999, when he moved to Columbia. He deeply cherished the many friendships made at each place he lived. Mr. Wood was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church and the JOY Sunday School Class, volunteered with Christian Ministries International, was a former trustee of Covenant Presbyterian Church ("The Barn") in West Simsbury, CT. and former Sunday School Superintendent of the Smyrna Pentecostal Holiness Church in Smyrna, GA. He had recently completed a second term on the board of the North Springs Property Owners Association, where he served as President of the Board. His special gift was a servant's heart (Romans 12:6-7). While he held few formal positions of power or authority, he embodied Jesus' teaching on servant leadership in Mark 11:42-44 as he served his family, the church, friends and neighbors.


Mr. Wood is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sara Kendrick Wood of Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, William (Bill) Clifford Wood, Jr. and Tammy Brown Wood of Elgin, SC and Kevin Lee Wood and Stacey Campbell Wood of Paris, TX; grandchildren, Catheine Janet Wood, Sara Lucinda Wood William Chao-Hung Wood, Hannah Hui-Ju Wood, Rebekah Xuan Wood, Elizabeth Yangcui Wood, Claire Chei-Lin Wood, Ryland Chase Wood, Mallory Elise Wood and Zeke William Wood; brothers, Jeff (Buddy) Holmes Wood, Jr. of Greenwood, SC, Clarence Anderson (Andy) Wood, Sr. of Ware Shoals, SC and James Luther Wood of Ware Shoals, SC. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Jessie Flora Morgan Wood.
