Mr. Lester Berndt, 87, of Morganton N.C., formerly of Dover, died Saturday afternoon after a brief illness.
Born in Dover, he was the son of the late William and Henrietta (Hoffman) Berndt. He retired from Gradall in 1985 after more than 30 years of service. He was a Navy veteran, serving on the USS Riegel in the Pacific during World War II. He was an avid outdoorsman and was often encountered on trails along the Tuscarawas River hunting for cress, wild mushrooms or berries.
He is survived by two daughters, Becky and J.D. Chappell, along with their sons, Eric, Todd and Jason, of Morganton N.C., and June Carol and Robert Begland, of Wilmington, Del., along with their sons, Michael and Tracy of Coppell, Texas, Doug of Denver, Colo., and Greg of Orlando, Fla.; and the three great-grandchildren complete the family. He is also survived by two brothers, Dean and Burman Berndt, both of Tuscarawas County.
Lester is preceded in death by his wife, June I. (Schlegel) Berndt; and six siblings, Carl, Edward (Toby), Milton and Donald Berndt, along with Henrietta Smith and Marion Burkholder.
Private services will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery.
The family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army.
