Elbert Dewey was an optometrist, practicing in the Chicago area. Many letters he wrote to various relatives have survived and are in my possession, indicating he had an office in the Reliance Building at 32 N. State Street, Chicago. His stepmother was Grace Stemmons Hickman Dewey, daughter of Henry John and Dulcenia Elizabeth Swem Hickman, formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio.
In a letter to his cousin, Miss Blanche Hickman, dated October 10,1924, Bert says "June Dewey, now about 4 months old, was born in the Westlake Hospital where I have a connection on June 29, hence her first name. She weighed about 8 lbs and has been from the very first a healthy and unusually good baby. Mibs says she is the best behaved of the three. Dick is now 12 and in 7th grade. Pat is 4 and getting very pretty with her black eyes and dark brown hair. I claim the color in Pat as being from the 'black Deweys,'i.e. those in the family with black eyes. Mibs claims it because her eyes are dark brown. So we have compromised and given Mibs the credit. It certainly keeps me scratching to feed and clothe those youngsters."
In another letter dated March 5, 1938, Mrs. Mabel Dewey wrote to Miss Hickman that "Bert passed away in his sleep on Feb. 2nd. He had suffered from heart trouble for the past year."
