Promoted Corporal Jul 15 1862.

Wounded severely May 22 1863 during the suicidal frontal assault of the heavily fortified Ft Beauregard at Vicksburg, MS. The assault of the 15 foot tall stockade surrounded by a 10 ft. wide ditch, which was conducted by multiple Iowa regiments, failed with great loss of life. This was the only assault ever attempted. Vicksburg and Ft Beauregard were eventually taken via a lengthy siege.
