KELLY HOLLIS BAXTER
Obituary

Kelly Hollis Baxter, age 53, passed away in Austin, Texas on June l8, 2008.

Kelly was born in Ft. Worth, Texas August 6, l954. His mother and father were Murphy and Betty Baxter. Most of his young life was spent in Midland and Houston, Texas. He attended Kinkaid High School in Houston and graduated from Texas A. and I. State College in Kingsville. Texas.

Kelly Baxter worked as an independent oil and gas operator and producer for over 30 years, during which he started two businesses, Amberjack Royalties and KHB Oil and Gas. Working independently in the Texas oil and gas industry allowed him the opportunity to get to know people from all walks of life. Kelly always said, "I am a lucky guy because I love what I do." He was a unique and honest individual who always made an impression on the people he met.

Kelly Baxter was a man of high integrity and strong character, and he will be greatly missed. He was a loving and devoted father who offered a wellspring of advice to his three beautiful daughters Ashley, Blair, and Holly. He had a knack for colloquial bits of wisdom that never failed to make everyone laugh and uplift their spirits, while always providing a unique insight. He shared his advice in clever sayings such as, "Don't bring a bucket of sand to the beach" or "Sometimes straight trees have crooked roots."

An avid and passionate outdoorsman, he loved bird hunting and fly-fishing with his buddies. Another one of his favorite pastimes was boating on Lake Travis with his daughters. He was a golf and baseball enthusiast and enjoyed spending time on the road.

Kelly had a great respect for the outdoors and supported many organizations focusing on conservation efforts, such as Ducks Unlimited, and the Coastal Conservation Association. He served as a board member of The Baxter Foundation for seven years, and was very passionate about P.O.W. and M.I. A.'s. He was a strong supporter of various collective charitable organizations.

Kelly loved the Pacific Ocean and felt a strong connection with Southern California and the surf culture. His love for the west coast began as a child when he spent many summers on the beaches of La Jolla. Kelly also spent 8 summers as a camper at Camp Longhorn, where he made some of his fondest memories. He always said his only regret in life was that he did not get to return as a Junior Counselor his ninth year.

Always a free spirit, he listened to Classic Rock and Blues guitar, and he was very proud of his nephew, John Andrew Baxter Jr., for his musical talent and affinity for the guitar.

Kelly will be remembered for his dynamic spirit, colorful language, quirky sense of humor, and his lifelong collection of white surfing t-shirts, in reverence to his deep respect of the ocean, nature's most powerful and omnipresent source of life, forever connecting his soul and spirit to all of creation and the wonderful family and friends whom he loved.

He is survived by his three daughters Ashley E. Baxter, Blair Baxter, and Holly Baxter, his sister Jane Baxter, and nephews John Andrew Baxter, Jr., and James Morgan Baxter and his wife Krystal. Kelly Baxter was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Andrew Baxter.

A Memorial Service will be held for Kelly Baxter July 20, 2008 at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, California.

Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Chapel Haven School in New Haven, Connecticut; Chapel Haven is a special needs school, where his youngest daughter Holly attends. The address is Chapel Haven, Inc., l040 Whalley Ave., New Haven, CT, 06515.
