John stowed away on a ship to New Brunswick at the age of 12, moving to Menominie, Wisconsin in 1857 and to Eau Claire Aug 18 1858. He enlisted on 29 Feb 1864 in Company K 36th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in the right knee at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Hanover, Virginia on 3 Jun 1864, dying on 8 Jun 1864 at City Point from his wounds. He is buried on the White House Landing, stated in the letter from the White House to his daughter Anna Jane Hill Blake. He was later moved to the Mass Graves at Cold Harbor National Cemetery.
