The son of John C. & Barbara (Eck) Henry, he married Lavinia Kennel September 22, 1853, and fathered Mary Etta (b. 07/28/54 - married George W. Biesecker), Elizabeth (b. 08/27/57 - married Isaac Newton Lightner), and Allen Dill (b. 09/29/59). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 8" tall with brown hair and gray eyes. Lavinia died in 1861, and he married Anna Mary Settle October 16, 1862, but they apparently had no children.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg September 1, 1864, as a private with Co. D, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry. On October 19, 1864, he was "seized with an epileptic fit while on picket duty" and performed no active duty thereafter. Hospitalized for a time at Point-of-Rocks, Maryland, he discharged the service by surgeon's certificate March 20, 1865, at Meade Station near Petersburg, Virginia. A note on his discharge states, "His general health has not been good for several years . . . He has no claim to pension or bounty."
